Even as the South Goa demolition squad is bracing up to raze down the structures standing on the land acquired for the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Goa campus at Cuncolim, the owners have sought time of 15 days to vacate the premises.
In another development, Cuncolim Municipal councilor Mario Moraes told the media at the site on Tuesday that the two structures, including a one-storied building, should not be demolished and the same should be put to use by the NIT since it is now government-owned property after the acquisition.
Around three structures are proposed to be razed down after the NIT, Goa approached the office of the Deputy Collector, Margao, who is also the chairman of the demolition squad to evict and demolish the structures on the acquired land admeasuring 4.56 lakh sqmts for smooth execution of the work of NITG.
The NITG had further informed the office of the deputy Collector, Margao that there was no rehabilitation plan of the persons affected by the eviction and demolition from the land.
In his notice issued to the three parties, the deputy Collector had pointed out that the structures standing on the acquired property have not been vacated till date. While issuing directions to the parties to vacate the structures, the deputy Collector had mulled action without further intimation.
The three parties that assembled near the site, told the media that they are only seeking time of 15 days to vacate the premises, though they have raised other issues, including compensation paid by the government.
CMC Councilor Mario Moraes, while supporting the demand of the three parties, demanded that the NIT make use of the one-storied building and an old house since the two structures have now become government property.
“The building is relatively new. Since the government had pegged the value of the building at Rs 50 lakh, I feel the structure should be put to use by the NITG,” Moraes added.
