Former Panaji Police Station in-charge, PI Sudesh Naik on Friday deposed before the Special Judge hearing the Panaji police station attack case that the police had to fire in the air after the mob turned violent and started attacking the police station and the police personnel.
Continuing his deposition in the case, PI Sudesh, who now heads the Panaji Sub-Police Division as the DySP, said six rounds were fired in the air to stop the rampaging mob from attacking the police station and the police personnel.
He pointed out that the police lobbed tear gas shells and lathi charged the mob before firing in the air. Two persons were nabbed from the adjoining military camp area after the incident.
Saying that Jennifer Monserrate, wife of then Taleigao MLA Atanasio Monserrate made her presence at the Panaji police station late that night, the prosecution witness pointed out that he immediately brought Jennifer at the police station to then SDPO Mohan Naik, who ordered to place her under arrest.
During the deposition, Adv Arun De Sa, appearing for Atanasio Monserrate drew attention of Judge Irshad Agha that PI Sudesh Naik was carrying with a file in the witness box, saying the witness has not taken leave of the court to take a glance at the file to refresh his memory.
CBI Prosecutor Noushad P M, however, countered by saying there’s nothing wrong with the witness carrying the file, stating that the prosecution witness did not open the file to refresh his memory.
PI Sudesh will continue his deposition at the next date of hearing on June 9.
