The All India Senior Citizens Confederation has made a fervent plea to the political class to support the Amendment Bill on the Maintenance Act and mete out justice for the senior citizens.
The confederation has also made a strong demand for the restoration of the railway concession for the elders in the country.
Office bearers of the Confederation had a meeting with members of the All Goa Senior Citizens Federation at the Margao Municipal hall on Friday to understand the problems affecting the senior citizens across the country and in Goa.
The plea for justice was made to Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, who was invited by the Confederation at the meeting.
In his brief address, Kamat fully supported the cause of senior citizens in Goa and across the country. He recalled how his government had over a decade come out with a host of schemes for the benefit of journalists, artists, etc to take care of the requirements during old age.
“I am fully sympathetic to the cause of senior citizens. I will take up your cause with the government so that justice is meted out to the senior citizens,” he said.
President of All Goa Senior Citizens Federation Diego Da Costa told the media on the sidelines of the conference that the Federation will take up the issues plaguing Goan senior citizens before the Confederation for solution. “The Deputy Collectors do not mete out justice to the senior citizens on the question of implementing the Maintenance Act. While some of these officers have been found prompt in disposing off the cases, there are others who take a long time to mete out justice for the elders,” Diego said.
He also demanded that the Amendment to the Maintenance Act is passed by Parliament at the earliest for the benefit of the senior citizens.
