PERNEM
Heavy rains that lashed Pernem taluka on Tuesday kept fire personnel on their toes, as trees got uprooted, while power supply, internet and telephone services were disrupted in many parts of the taluka.
An acacia tree collapsed on the road at Chandel-Fakripato, blocking traffic for about 2 hours. Fire fighters rushed to the site, and officers Prashant Dhargalkar, Rohan Gawas, Vishal Patil, Pradeep Asolkar and Ketan Kamulkar cleared the tree from the road.
At Mandrem, drains were blocked and the local panchayat's failure to take up adequate pre-monsoon works left the area inundated, making it difficult for motorists and pedestrians.
Rising river water reached the huts of fishermen at Morjim, prompting some fishermen to tie their fishing boats to huge trees to prevent these from flowing into the water.
Farming activity has been suspended in Pernem taluka, as fields have turned into huge lakes due to the heavy downpour.
Electricity, telephone and internet services were also disrupted at many places in Pernem taluka due to uprooting of trees.
