In a proactive measure to safeguard temples from theft and enhance security measures, Pernem Police have initiated a WhatsApp group exclusively for members of temple committees.

This initiative aims to foster collaboration between the police force and temple committees to ensure effective policing and prevent untoward incidents.

Under the directives of SDPO Pernem, a new protocol has been established wherein each temple will maintain a dedicated register. Patrolling personnel will regularly visit these temples and log their visits in the register. Committee members are urged to review the register daily. If any discrepancies are noted, such as missed patrols or suspicious activities, they are instructed to report promptly in the WhatsApp group.

This step not only aims to deter thefts within temple premises but also aims to maintain a visible police presence in the locality, thereby deterring potential criminal activities. Concerns raised by committee members regarding gatherings in secluded areas will also be addressed through increased patrolling efforts.

The WhatsApp group serves as a real-time communication channel for immediate action and feedback, ensuring a collaborative approach to maintaining public safety and security across temple sites in Pernem.

Temples told to install CCTVs

Given rising temple thefts, the Goa Police have instructed the temple committees to implement security measures such as mandatory installation of CCTV cameras, burglary alarms and adequate illumination in temple areas.

In a meeting convened by the in-charges of all police stations in the North District, the presidents and office bearers of temple committees along with temple representatives discussed implementing robust security measures for temples.

“The primary focus was on preventing temple thefts and ensuring the safety of devotees, temple properties, idols, fund peti, valuable articles (including gold ornaments), and other valuables, as well as cash (notes and coins). The meeting emphasized the mandatory installation of CCTV cameras, Burglary alarms and Adequate illumination in temple areas,” Superintendent of Police (North) Akshat Kaushal told the media on Saturday.
