BICHOLIM: A large portion of the Mauli temple hall at Kankumbi-Karnataka collapsed on Saturday, following digging activity at the Kalsa Bhandura canal site by the Karnataka Nirawari Nigam (KNN).
Expressing concern over the incident, environmentalist Rajendra Kerkar added that KNN authorities have, however, assured to reconstruct the collapsed temple hall.
It may be recalled that villagers of Kankumbi have been consistently opposing the construction of Kalsa Bhandura canal due to threat to the Mauli temple, which comes in close proximity to the canal, as well other adverse effects to the village.
The issue was subsequently raised in the Mhadei water dispute tribunal and a hearing in the case, which was to be held in February, was postponed for April 27.
Speaking to reporters, Kerkar has expressed concern over the developments.
“Karnataka is playing foul with Goa and work on the canal is being undertaken in full swing by taking advantage of the postponed hearing,” said Kerkar. “Work on the canal will prove detrimental to Goa.”
“KNN authorities have assured to undertake reconstruction of the collapsed temple hall,” Kerkar added.
