Portion of old culvert gives way under truck weight at Camrabhat

Locals allege PWD work on structure superficial

Portion of old culvert gives way under truck weight at Camrabhat

PANAJI
A portion of the old culvert at Camrabhat-Panaji collapsed when a loaded truck carrying construction material was passing over it.

A wheel of the truck went inside the damaged part of the culvert and the truck tilted, but the driver escaped unhurt and a tragedy was averted as the vehicle did not fall in the nullah.

Locals said that following demands, the culvert was repaired by the PWD before the election, but they alleged that the work was superficial.

The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) allotted Rs 39 crore to repair and restore the St Inez Nullah. As part of this work, heavy vehicles have been moving in Camrabhat area, weakening the old culvert.

Meanwhile, CCP Mayor Rohit Monserrate has said the tender for reconstruction of the damaged portion of the culvert has been already allotted.

“In the meanwhile, temporary alternate arrangements to cross the nullah will be done,” he said.
