Power outages, trees fall in Bardez

A number of trees collapsed and power outages were reported in different parts of Bardez, as unseasonal rains lashed the taluka on Saturday morning.

According to sources, trees are reported to have collapse in Ucassaim, Parra, Porvorim, Britona, Calangute, Candolim, Bastora and Siolim.

Many of the trees fell on power cables, disrupting power supply in various areas like Corjuem, Ucassaim, Porvorim, Bastora and Siolim. Workers and staff of the electricity department worked to restore power supply to the affected areas.

One tree fell on a two-wheeler at Orda-Candolim, while another tree fell on a house in Umtawaddo-Calangute. Both these trees were cleared by the house owners themselves, while other trees were cut by the teams from the fire stations at Mapusa, Porvorim and Pilerne.

Meanwhile, a godown owned by Nilesh Virnodkar caught fire due to a short circuit at Taliwada-Mapusa.

A fire tender from the Mapusa fire station went to the site and extinguished the fire. Cotton sarees in the godown were destroyed, causing a loss estimated at Rs 80,000.
