The Goa State Commission for Persons with Disabilities (GSCPD) is working on various schemes and proposals in sync with the government of Goa, to make the State a more disable-friendly place to live in for persons with various types of disabilities.
GSCPD Commissioner Guruprasad Pawaskar elaborated on some proposals that are in pipeline and how these would be implemented through various government departments to make life easy for PwDs.
Talking to The Goan, the Commissioner shared that the recently concluded Purple Fest proved to be an eye opener for many, including the officials in various departments who were sensitised on the needs and requirements of the persons with disabilities (PwDs) for easy access to buildings, public places and beaches. Also, a brainstorming has been initiated to prepare schemes that would enable the PwDs to lead a hassle-free and independent life.
“We could successfully offer a platform to 21 types of disabilities to voice their issues and showcase their talent. The Purple Fest was a huge success, in the sense that no untoward incident happened during the fest, thanks to the dedicated volunteers who helped out at various venues, making the operations smooth. The preparations had begun 15 days prior to the actual day of the opening. We have documented the events and panel discussions, zeroing on the issues and suggestions that came in from various angles so that we can work on the solutions,” stated Guruprasad Pawaskar.
He pointed out that the Goa government is keen in continuing the annual event, and that the Central government will be funding 50% expenses.
“If the Goa government is unable to support the event, GSCPD will host it,” he assured.
