PANAJI: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday directed engineers and officials of the Public Works Department to repair pot-holes across the state when the first dry spell affords them the opportunity.
At a meeting called by Public Works Department Minister Ramkrishna Dhavlikar in the wake of widespread criticism of poor condition of roads following the first monsoon showers, Parrikar said the department should have no excuse and get down to work at the first dry spell.
A statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office said Parrikar presided over the meeting called by Dhavalikar.
The Principle Chief Engineer, Chief Engineer, Executive Engineers and others were asked for an explanation to the pathetic condition of roads pan-Goa.
The officials, sources said, conveyed their preparedness to repair potholes but claimed they faced hindrances due to the weather.
As per instructions issued in the meeting, all Executive Engineers will make visits in their jurisdictions to check the state of roads for potholes, fallen trees, etc and submit a weekly report to the Principle Chief Engineer.
The engineers have also been instructed to exercise powers to take remedial action to improve the quality of roads in quick time.
Parrikar also asked the PWD officials to hold monthly common committee meetings with the respective District Collectors to iron out the lack of co-ordination in road-digging works so that repair works are instantly executed.
