The plastic-free Saptah campaign has not only drawn support from schools, clubs and associations in Vasco, but it has also received support elsewhere in the State.
In an initiative which has been hailed across the Port town, NSS volunteers of Government College, Quepem distributed 25,000 paper bags to vendors at the Vasco Saptah as part of their project.
At a programme in the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) office, the college NSS Convenor Dr Sushila Mendes expressed gratitude to MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes for permitting them to distribute 25,000 bags prepared by college students especially for the Vasco Saptah free of cost.
“The MMC has set an example and this module should be replicated in various parts of Goa, especially where traditional fairs are organised,” said Dr Mendes.
Dr R G Kulkarni, head of the Zoology department and former NSS convener of the Quepem government college also spoke on the occasion.
MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes praised the efforts of the Quepem college for supporting the MMC in achieving its target “Beat Plastic Pollution”.
“It’s a great moment that the Government College at Quepem has joined in our initiative. There are many schools, NGOs and social groups who came forward to make this year’s Saptah plastic-free,” said Fernandes.
“These efforts should be spread all over Goa so that we can have a plastic-free state,” Fernandes added.
