Come December and the decades-old South Goa Administrator of Comunidades building will get the much-awaited facelift – thanks to the intervention by PWD Minister Digambar Kamat.
Sadly, the administration is yet to find suitable place to store the old comunidade documents, with the ongoing work posing risk and danger to the age-old records.
Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, who was instrumental in reviving the tender for the refurbishment of the comunidades building after taking over the reign of the PWD portfolio, said it is purely for the Administrator of Comunidades, district Collector and the components of Comunidade bodies from South Goa to take a call how to utilise the imposing building after completion of the renovation work in December.
“My role is only to get the building refurbished since it is standing in the heart of the commercial capital as an eyesore for lack of repairs and renovation. My role ends after the refurbishment work is complete. Components of Comunidade bodies, Comunidade Administrator and the district Collector should sit and decide over the utilisation of the building,” he said after formally launching the renovation work at an estimated cost of Rs 3 crore.
Kamat recalled that he had once given an offer to build a multi-storey building by razing down the existing building, but the plan did not take off due to various issues.
While the renovation work is progressing as per schedule, the contractor has encountered problems over the storage of the old documents still housed in the building.
To tide over the storage issue, the PWD Minister has ordered the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Margao, Ganesh Barve to set up a committee comprising of the Comunidade components, Comunidade Administrator to identify the records which are required and to dispose of other documents. He has instructed the SDM to find a suitable place for the storage of the documents and facilitate the contractor to execute the work.
