Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar on Tuesday launched the construction of four new culverts and road-widening works near Tanya Hotel, in the presence of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Girish Borker, municipal councillors, and local residents.

Speaking to reporters after the launch, Salkar said the project aims to address critical drainage issues and prevent waterlogging during heavy rains.

The road widening initiative, he said, would cater to the increasing traffic expected from the upcoming railway underpass, enhancing both safety and traffic flow.

“We have around four Portuguese-era pipelines functioning as culverts in this stretch. Being old, they sometimes obstruct the smooth flow of water, leading to flood-like situations in low-lying areas. We are now setting up four new culverts and widening the road by four metres,” said Salkar.

He added that the newly widened road will facilitate traffic movement from the under-construction railway underpass and enable easier passage for fire tenders. It will also support access to a proposed sports complex planned on the open ground opposite Tanya Hotel.

Salkar said that the work is being undertaken at an estimated cost of Rs 1.27 crore.

“We will soon start cleaning major Nullahs and initiate pre-monsoon works. I appeal to the public to cooperate during the ongoing works, as this is a long-pending and much-needed project,” he said.

He further informed that road widening will be taken up at around eight different locations. “The widened roads will not only ensure smoother traffic but also improve the visual appeal of the area. We’ve received NOCs from residents and the Navy for these projects. This is being executed with a 30-year vision, and I request continued public support for these vital initiatives,” he said.
