A professor at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and former Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University Varun Sahni will take over as Vice-Chancellor of Goa University, after the present Vice-Chancellor Satish Shetye’s term comes to an end on October 24.

An MA (JNU), M Phil (Oxon) and D Phil (Oxon), Sahni is presently Professor in International Politics at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and Chairperson, Centre for International Politics, Organization and Disarmament (CIPOD). He joined JNU as an associate professor and has been a professor since 2003. He has also served as the vice-chancellor of Jammu University from 2008 to 2012.

His areas of interest and specialisation include nuclear deterrence, regional security, changing power balances in the Asia-Pacific, evolving security concepts, emerging powers, IBSA and BRICS, Indian foreign policy, international relations theory, Latin American politics, technology in education.

Earlier, Goa Governor Mridula Sinha had appointed a three-member committee headed by renowned Scientist Dr Raghunath Mashelkar to recommend the names of candidates for the post of vice-chancellor.

The term of Satish Shetye, whose term ends on October 24 was granted an extension of one year by the State Government after his term ended in October, last year.
