Expressing concern over the movement of heavy vehicles near a school, the Siolim-Sodiem Gram Sabha on Sunday resolved to approach the Goa State Commission for Child Rights taking into consideration the safety of school kids.
The locals also demanded compensation to farmers whose fields were destroyed on account of the construction of Tillari canal.
The villagers said that the movement of vehicles near the Holy Cross High School disturbed the students and it also raised the concern of safety of the student community.
They said with vehicles moving at high speed both the students and teaching faculty faced a lot of problems in the area.
A villager pointed out the need to restrict movement of heavy vehicles during the school hours.
The locals also stressed the need to install speed breakers and construct footpaths near the school as vehicles were parked close to the gate of the school.
According to a local, a letter was written to the traffic department requesting for staff to manage traffic near the school but nothing materialised.
Deputy Sarpanch Nilesh Vaigankar expressed helplessness over the letters written to various departments which failed to tackle the problem.
The gram sabha then unanimously resolved to write to the Goa State Commission for Child Rights.
The issue of frequent power cuts and irregular water supply also came up for discussion at the gram sabha.
The villagers along with the panchayat body decided to meet the water supply officials on the water issue.
The locals also demanded introducing no parking zones in the village to curb traffic congestion on roads.
