Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Kamat said the building had deteriorated over the years and required extensive repairs rather than demolition.
"This building is one of the oldest institutional buildings. We are renovating its components because it had become an eyesore to the people who enter Margao. With the help and support of the Comunidade, I could have demolished this building and constructed a multi-storey building, but they had their own problems and cooperated in ensuring the building is renovated instead," he said.
As part of the restoration, records and documents will be shifted temporarily, while old furniture will be disposed of to facilitate the work. Kamat said the Sub-Divisional Magistrate and Deputy Collector have been directed to constitute a committee, along with representatives of the Comunidade, to oversee the restoration process.
He added that the allocation of space in the building after the renovation will be decided by the district administration in consultation with Comunidade members.
"My role as the Minister and MLA is to ensure that government buildings are refurbished and remain in good condition," Kamat said.
