Gudi Padwa, one of the most auspicious occasions in the Sanatan Dharma calendar of festive events, is celebrated with much fervour across the nation and also among the Indian nationals settled abroad. It’s the beginning of a new year as per the Hindu calendar and this year it’s on April 13. Recalling that it was on this day that Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman after defeating demon king Ravana in Lanka and reminding that one of the most prominent shopping done on this auspicious day is that of gold. Goa’s well known Ulhas Jewellers has announced special offers for those who purchase gold coins and bars, by keeping the lowest possible rates.

“As we know, Gudi Padwa marks a new year as per the Hindu calendar and buying gold on this auspicious muhurta is believed to bring prosperity and wealth to the family. With reducing gold prices, we expect higher demand and rush at our showrooms on this Gudi Padwa next week. Our showrooms are braced up with all Covid safety precautions to welcome our customers,” shared Vikram Verlekar, managing director of Ulhas Jewellers Pvt Ltd while speaking to The Goan.

Ulhas Jewellers has earned multiple awards in the industry since its inception in 1927 and become Goa's most favourite jewellery house. “Our collections of ornaments include stunning pieces of diamond jewellery that comes with finest craftsmanship, purity and beauty,” boasts Verlekar.

Gudi Padwa, also referred to as Samwatsara by the Konkani community and in parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, the festival is celebrated as Ugadi.

First, a wooden stick is covered with a piece of bright red or yellow coloured cloth. After this, a kalash made of silver, copper or bronze is placed upside down on one end of the stick. A dash of vermillion (kumkum) and turmeric (haldi) is applied on the outer surface of the Kalash. This ensemble is called Gudi and it is placed outside the door or the window so that everyone in the vicinity gets to see it. A garland made of sugar candy (saakhar gaathi) and neem leaves is also hung with the Gudi. This ritual signifies the bittersweet experiences of life.
