Following Air India’s decision to shift its Goa-Gatwick flights from Dabolim to Mopa, Congress leader Elvis Gomes on Tuesday said more shockers are in store for the airport.
Speaking to reporters on the future of Dabolim airport, Gomes accused the government of misleading Goans about the future of the airport and said the government itself was throwing its weight behind Mopa to the detriment of Dabolim.
Gomes said the claim made by him last month about the impending shift of Air India operations to Gatwick from Dabolim to Mopa had turned out to be true despite a denial by government sources and added that more shockers were in store for Dabolim.
“At the ‘Arabian Travel Mart’ in Dubai in May, a politician was personally exhorting representatives of other international operators flying from Dabolim to move operations to Mopa with scant regard for the people of Goa who are already facing inconvenience due to shift of Air India,” said Gomes.
“The economy centred around the historic Dabolim airport is being crippled by this BJP Government that has an MLA representing Dabolim with two more MLAs from Vasco and Mormugao also being from BJP,” said Gomes.
He added that Mopa airport operations will be 30 to 40% costlier for the flyer than what it is at Dabolim.
“All that we had demanded was additional airlines from Mopa without shifting operations from Dabolim,” he said .
