The PWD in Quepem has claimed that various steps have been initiated to provide drinking water to hilly areas and other remote parts in Quepem Taluka affected by acute water shortage during the summer.
A delegation of locals from Quepem had recently complained about water shortage in Quepem Taluka, claiming that villages such as Morpirla, Shirlim and Barcem were facing acute water shortage and that, water tankers did not reach those areas.
Speaking to The Goan, PWD Assistant Engineer Vasuraj Karmalkar informed that water tankers are being sent regularly, while rural schemes are utilised in these areas to overcome water shortage.
“The locals were supporters of BJP party and they had come to inquire about the water supply situation in the interior parts of Quepem Taluka,” said Karmalkar.
“I told them that all steps possible have been taken from the department's side. I explained to them that Barcem, Morpirla, Caurem-Pirla areas are deprived of Selaulim water and hence, PWD has been supplying water to these areas through PWD tankers in the summer, depending on the population of that area.”
“These areas are mostly dependent on rural schemes for water such as springs, borewells and open wells. When water from these sources starts drying up, PWD immediately starts supplying water from tankers to areas such as Shirlim, Sukhdalem, Velipwada (Barcem) and Khede-Assode,” Karmalkar added.
“But in areas like Gokuldem, Rawapan, Pissone and Padi, water is available through rural schemes. But to ensure enough water supply to these hilly areas, we have sent additional tankers to these areas,” he said.
Dismissing claims of water shortage in these areas, the PWD assistant engineer said: “The PWD department has studied these areas for several years and has worked out solutions to curb water supply problems during the summer.”
