Goa State Horticulture Corporation Limited (GSHCL) has decided to extend the sale of subsidised onions through its mobile vans till September 30.
Speaking to 'The Goan', GSHCL Chairman, Kiran Kandolkar, said, “We will continue selling onions through 18 mobile vans at a rate that is 25 per cent cheaper than what is currently being sold at our horticulture outlets. Onion prices are expected to reduce within the next few days.”
Onions prices in the open market are reducing gradually, with horticulture outlets selling the bulb at Rs 43 per kilo.
The Corporation had earlier announced that its mobile vans will sell onions at eight KTC bus stands from August 31 for two hours in the evening, for a period of 15 days.
“We have discontinued the sale of onions through the vans at the bus stands, however, it will continue at various other destinations,” informed Kandolkar. These 18 mobile vans visit nearly 340 destinations across the State selling vegetables.
Meanwhile, the Corporation has managed to sell nearly 19 tonnes of fruits during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival.
“The Corporation used to sell nearly 4.5 tonnes of fruits twice a week. But during this festive season, due to the increased demand, it has managed to sell nearly 19 tonnes of fruits,” informed Kandolkar.
Presently, fruits are being sold at horticulture outlets twice a week “ on Mondays and Wednesdays. Some consumers also informed that the prices are nearly 30 per cent lesser compared to those in the open market.
The Corporation is also selling medium-sized coconuts at Rs 14 per nut at all its outlets. These coconuts are procured from local farmers.
Presently, the Corporation procures vegetables from 13 suppliers from various places including Belgaum and Kolhapur.
