Residents of Tivim on Sunday staged a protest rally to oppose the proposed hotmixing plant project near electricity sub-station on the Olaulim-Tivim plateau.
Claiming that the plant would be hazardous to health, the villagers submitted a memorandum to the member secretary of the Goa State Pollution Control Board opposing the project.
The villagers also alleged that the projects is coming up on the Tivim-Revora border and Revora Panchayat and communidae have given NoC to the project. As this project is 200 metres away from the human settlement, villagers have demanded to revoke the permission to the project.
The villagers in the memorandum stated that the smoke released from the plant and hydrocarbon gases will lead to lungs damage, cancer and other diseases.
The villagers have also forwarded the copies of the memorandum to the chief minister, Chief Secretary, local MLA and North Goa Communidade Administration.
About 300 villagers along with MLA Nilkanth Harlankar, environmentalist Ramesh Gawas, Tivim Sarpanch Trupti Shinde, Deputy Sarpanch Shivdas Kambli and panchas marched to the proposed site from Olaulim.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Harlankar said foul smell from the plant could have a bad impact on people's health. "Some months ago, the Tivim Panchayat had written to me regarding this project. I had taken up the issue with the chief minister and the Goa State Pollution Control Board and also raised the issue in the assembly session, where I was told permission for the plant was not yet given," he added.
"If the government has not given permission for the project, how come machineries are seen at the project site? Let's get united to throw this project out of the village," appealed Harlankar.
