In yet another incident within a month, a Karnataka-bound truck was detained for spilling garbage on the Manohar Parrikar Canacona Bypass NH66 in Loliem village.
On noticing a long trail of waste on the road, alert locals, along with former sarpanch and Loliem-Polem panch Nishant Prabhudessai, followed the truck and intercepted the vehicle at Polem.
Prabhudessai, Loliem-Polem sarpanch Sachin Naik and residents then notified the police, and the truck was detained for further action.
According to sources, the Karnataka-registered truck was carrying garbage from Mapusa and heading towards Karnataka.
The driver claimed that due to heavy bumps on the bypass, the nylon rope tied to the tarpaulin covering the trash got loose and garbage began dropping down.
The driver added that he learnt about the situation only after villagers stopped the vehicle at Polem.
Loliem-Polem sarpanch Sachin Naik said that authorities should not allow the haphazard transportation of garbage and should, instead, make it mandatory to transport it in a container to prevent spillage.
“Our residents have to suffer the unbearable stench when garbage drops on the road. There is also a danger to other motorists, especially two-wheelers if the garbage from moving trucks falls on them,” said Naik.
