The Valpoi Excise office on Friday afternoon seized 190 boxes of liquor worth Rs 8.21 lakh from a truck at the excise checkpost in Keri-Sattari.

According to reports, the excise officers became suspicious of the driver of a truck (KA-25-B-6449), which was proceeding from Goa to Karnataka via Chorla.

The truck was stopped at the excise checkpost for a regular check, but driver did not stop and drove the vehicle at some distance away from the checkpost. Suspecting something fishy, the excise guard on duty ran behind the truck, but the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled from the site.

The excise officers later checked the truck and found 190 boxes of liquor which were placed below some vegetables. The truck along with the liquor were seized by excise officials, Excise inspector Vibhuti Shetye told The Goan.

The checks on liquor being smuggled from Goa to Karnataka have been intensified at various check posts in

the State, in view of the forthcoming Karnataka assembly elections.
