A couple of months after a minor was kidnapped from the railway platform, the Margao Railway station is back in the news “ this time after a baby girl, aged around four-five months, was found abandoned on the platform on Saturday.
City-based child rights activists have demanded that the Konkan railway police as well as the railway authorities come down heavily on ticketless women loitering at the railway station in the interest of the children they carry.
In the instant case, the girl was found abandoned by her mother on platform no two around 6 pm on Saturday before the Konkan railway police took the baby in their custody. Police said that the girl will be taken for medical examination at Hospicio before being taken to the Mathru Chaya house for the orphaned children at Davli-Ponda.
Child rights activist, Auda Viegas, who was called by the Konkan railway police to assist in the investigations, said the abandoned infant appeared hale and hearty, but demanded that the railway authorities maintain a vigil on parents and single women with children loitering at the railway platforms.
“Our preliminary investigation has revealed that the woman was known to many in and around the railway station. The CCTV surveillance camera footage shows that the girl was in custody of a woman before being abandoned on the platform. This incident has come after the kidnapping of the minor at the Margao railway station. I think the railway authorities should maintain a vigil on women in inebriated state loitering on the platform,” she said.
