Launching works to beautify the dark spot at the Mangor Junction, Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar on Monday said the initiative to beautify dark spots was to prevent people from dumping garbage at collection points or roadsides.
“There are major dark spots at the Mangor junction and Varunapuri junction which have to be cleared. We will beautify the place and place benches, to give this area an entirely new look," said Salkar.
"The Mangor Junction is one of the busiest junctions and there is a bus stop here, but the area is so dirty and full of stench, causing an inconvenience to people. Municipal labours are also tired of clearing the area on a daily basis, but the garbage is dumped again and again.”
“We are also planning to install CCTVs and have a watchman here after which we will meet people and start fining people as the last option. There should not be a single dark spot anywhere considering that door-to-door garbage collection is happening at all locations but people must make use of the facility and stop dumping garbage in the area.
“We will personally meet the people of the area along with municipal engineer and sanitary inspector before we start acting on violators," said Salkar.
Councillor Fredrick Henriques said that dark spots will be cleared soon.
“We assure that things will change here in a month’s time but we need people to cooperate with us,” said Henriques.
Councillor Amey Chopdekar said there is a dark spot in his ward at Varunapuri junction.
“We will beautify that dark spot with pavers, benches, illumination and CCTV cameras, after we finish the works here at Mangor," said Chopdekar.
Councillors Girish Borker and Devita Arolkar, and Chief Officer Jayant Tari were also present during an inspection of the Mangor dark spot.
