Alemao, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, said the decision to replace Amit Patkar was taken after nearly a year of discussions with elected representatives and senior party functionaries.
“The High Command consulted everyone. The party is united behind Girish,” he told television channel Prudent Media in an exclusive interview.
He said the Congress was now focused on strengthening its organisation and preparing for the 2027 Goa Assembly elections.
“Our priority is to strengthen the party machinery and connect with people,” Alemao said.
The Opposition leader said defeating the BJP in 2027 would require unity among Opposition parties.
“There is no alternative to Opposition unity,” he said, indicating the party’s plans to work with like-minded groups.
Alemao also ruled out giving space to defectors in the party. He said the Congress would neither welcome political turncoats nor give them tickets for the Assembly elections.
“We will not reward betrayal. The party stands against defectors,” he said.
Alemao also announced the launch of the Goa Rakhan Yatra, a campaign aimed at reaching out to voters across the State. He said the yatra would help the Congress achieve its target of winning 27 seats in the 2027 elections.
The statement comes amid speculation of internal dissatisfaction after the change in party leadership. Alemao’s remarks appear aimed at projecting unity and reassuring party workers that the Congress remains united despite the transition.
With the BJP holding a strong position in the State, Alemao’s focus on Opposition unity and grassroots outreach is expected to shape the Congress’ strategy ahead of the polls.
The Goa Rakhan Yatra is likely to be the party’s main public outreach programme in the run-up to the elections.
