CB summons two Instagram users over derogatory religious remarks

PANAJI

The two Instagram users, who attempted to spread hate through derogatory religious comments, have been summoned to appear before the investigation team of the Crime Branch (CB) on April 27.

The accused are believed to be twin sisters who allegedly posted hate comments to express their anger over the killing of the dreaded gangster duo Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf in Uttar Pradesh earlier this month.

The CB had registered a First Information Report (FIR) against two Instagram users, who are reportedly school students, taking suo-motu cognisance of the matter. The insensitive remarks emerged in the late hours of April 18 soon after which it went viral and were widely condemned by other social media users who called on the police to take action against them.

The CB approached Instagram to furnish details of the accused users and pull down the derogatory remarks that could trigger communal tension in the State.

Superintendent of Police (North Goa and CB) Nidhin Valsan said that FIR under section 153-A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence) read with 34 (common intention) of Indian Penal Code IPC and section 67 of IT act (Punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) has been registered by CB. The investigation is also being jointly probed by the Cyber Crime Cell.

"Twin sisters who allegedly made the religiously derogatory  Instagram posts have been summoned under section CRPC 41(A) by Crime Branch Goa in the case registered," the CB SP said.
