Niz Goenkar Revolutionary Front (NGRF) on Thursday demanded installation of CCTV cameras at all police stations in the State.
NGRF Spokesperson Chandrashekar Vasta told reporters that he had written to the chief secretary on the issue, stating that most police stations did not have CCTV cameras installed.
"Not having CCTV cameras at police stations amounts to a violation of human rights. It is vital to have CCTV cameras in all police stations and the cabins of police officials and duty officers.”
“Even the Supreme Court issued guidelines in 1997 making it compulsory to have CCTV cameras in all police stations," said Vasta.
Stating that there have been cases of custodial deaths and arrest of opposition leaders, Vasta said there is no proof if people are being harassed.
“Hence, the chief secretary must take a note of our letter and install CCTV cameras across all police stations, cabins of police officials, police custody and police outposts within 15 days in the larger interest of public," said Vasta.
