The Human Rights Commission has directed Superintendent of Police, North Goa, to investigate the matter of lathicharge took place on NSUI students on the second week of January. SP has been asked to submit report before March 2.
It may be recalled that on January 8, whilst NSUI students were trying to meet Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and were walking towards his official residence from Church Square, Panaji, police constables deployed there had resorted to lathicharge on students.
Subsequently, President of NSUI, Naushad Chowdhari had lodged complain with police and Human Rights Commission. Acting on this complaint now Human Rights Commission has given directives to investigate the matter.
According to Naushad, they were supposed to meet the Chief Minister with a request to conduct an online examination on account of the spike in COVID cases. However, they were restrained by the police from going ahead and were detained without listening to their grievances.
NSUI had named one Nilesh Naik, Head Constable and Duty Master attached to Panjim Police Station, as accused person who resorted to lathicharge without permission from authorities.
