CANACONA
Sara Shamba Naik Desai submitted her nomination papers for the post of Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) Chairperson on Monday.
The nominations for the post of CMC chairperson, which has been vacant after Ramakant Naik Gaonkar resigned a week ago, will be open till 12 noon of Wednesday and an election to the post of CMC Chairperson will be held on May 30.
Desai submitted her nomination form to the CMC Chief Officer Mangaldas Gaonkar in the presence of six other ruling group councillors “ Simon Rebello, Ramakant Naik Gaunkar, Laxuman Pagui, Amita Pagi, Narcisco Fernandes and Gandesh Madganvkar “ in the 12-member CMC body.
As agreed by the ruling group, the post of chairperson and vice-chairperson is to be shared and rotated among these 7 councillors.
Desai is expected to be elected unopposed since all 12 CMC councillors have pledged supported to the BJP and its Lok Sabha candidate. However, the original 7-member group has insisted that it will complete its tenure with only the ruling group of councillors.
Incidentally, Desai is likely to occupy the post of chairperson for around 18 months of the remaining 24 months and is expected to hand over the baton to Palolem Councillor Laxuman (Bakal) Pagui for the remaining 6 months of the council’s tenure.
