Based on complaints by a concerned citizen, recently the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has asked Goa’s Public Works Department to remove the speed breakers and rumblers from national highways that run through Goa. These stretches are NH-378 i.e., between Belagavi and Panaji and NH-566 between Farmagudi and Bambolim. Agreed that these obstacles should be removed as per the guidelines of the Supreme Court and MoRTH.
But considering the way people speed on the highways, presence of village crossings, people driving/riding in opposite direction as a U-turn may be a couple of kilometers away, loitering cattle and stray dogs, wild animals crossing etc., it would be prudent to install speed breakers, rumblers and traffic signals at crucial junctions. These would also keep the drivers alert and prevent them from falling asleep during long rides. In the absence of officially constructed speed breakers, the villagers do so illegally and with no warning boards lead to accidents and mishaps.
