Check on drugged driving also needed in State

Traffic police in Goa are undertaking a drive against drunken driving in view of the increasing number of road accidents attributed to it. It is pertinent to note that in the past few months several drug seizures have been made in the State. It won’t be wrong to say that drugs are easily available in Goa as it is a tourist destination. Some studies report that opioids can cause drowsiness and impair thinking and judgment which can double the risk of having a crash. It is understood that intake of alcohol along with marijuana and other drugs can impair the ability to drive because they slow coordination, judgment and reaction times. Cocaine and methamphetamine can make drivers more aggressive and reckless. As per the Motor Vehicle Act if one gets caught driving while intoxicated, for the first time it can attract a fine of up to Rs 10,000 and/or a jail term of 6 months. If someone is driving in a rash manner or is involved in a crash then the person should be tested not only for alcohol but for drugs as well.
