Based on 2026 data, the minimum daily cost for a single resident living in Goa”including basic accommodation, home-cooked food, and essential transport”is approximately Rs 500 to Rs 700 per day. This estimate assumes a frugal lifestyle, such as staying in a low-cost, long-term rental or a shared PG and avoiding eating out.

Daily Minimum Cost Breakdown (Estimated): Accommodation: Rs 250“Rs 350 per day (including monthly expenses such as electricity, water, mobile and bus fare). Food/Groceries: Rs 150“Rs 250 per day (home cooking using gas or eating at local eateries). Utilities & Transport: Rs 100“Rs 150 per day (shared scooter, basic electricity and transport).

During the off-season (monsoon, June to October), the cost of fish, eggs and chicken may increase. Eating at tourist shacks is excluded, as it can significantly raise daily food expenses compared to home-cooked meals. For a slightly more comfortable yet modest lifestyle, a resident may spend around Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 per month, which works out to about Rs 500“Rs 650 per day per person.

For a five-member family, costs are more complex and often burdensome. Many people reduce their expenses to save money, as they do not earn government-level salaries. For a middle-class family, the minimum daily cost per person may be around Rs 125 to Rs 150, which comes to Rs 3,750 to Rs 4,500 per month per head. For a five-member family, the total monthly cost may range from Rs 19,000 to Rs 23,000.

This reflects the reality of the middle class, often living under financial pressure. The Goan census should record such data to compare it with the per capita income index. The government must take steps to support families and improve their economic stability.
