Hundreds of people (comprising of residents of Old Goa, members of Save Old Goa Action Committee (SOGAC), activists, environmentalists and others) gathered in Old Goa on Sunday to protest and call upon the State government to stop the ongoing work of the proposed mall project at the world heritage site near the Basilica of Bom Jesus & which is being developed by the Tourism department despite the fact that construction cannot be permitted within 100 metres of any heritage site. Well, it looks like the government is hell-bent on slowly destroying this world famous heritage site by bringing it's own destructive projects on the quiet in the name of development in Goa. On one hand, this government is heard talking of promoting spiritual tourism and on the other is seen trying to destroy/sell even such world famous historical holy sites to businesses-minded outsiders in Goa. Why, didn't the same government earlier allow a bungalow of an outsider to come up illegally in the close vicinity of Old Goa despite strong protests from Goans some years back? I think that the present government should immediately resign for the betterment of Goa's future.
