The recent amendments to sections of the Code of Comunidades have stirred a hornet’s nest. The manner in which the Bill was hastily cleared by the ruling benches on the floor of the House surely has something more than what meets the eye.
It appears that our ruling politicians are running out of land available to satisfy their greed and are now launching a direct assault on the pre-Portuguese system of the Comunidades (one of the last bastion of Goa’s identity)
It is a fact that many comunidades are badly managed where some committees are unfortunately enticed by greed. This needs to be addressed appropriately by the comunidade management themselves in a specific manner.
Giving control to the government by way of amendments is much worse and is surely not the answer.
The way the our government is selling our rivers, ports, giving away large tracts of land to the Centre or outside businessmen, it appears the comunidade land is the next big opportunity to satisfy the greed of some politicians.
Opposition parties should take up the fight for comunidades and must call on the Governor not to give assent to the amendments that have been passed in the legislative assembly.
Its time Goans fight tooth and nail to force the Goa government to back down on this assault!
