It is learnt that in an order passed on March 28, the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) has reportedly approved an overall average power tariff hike by 5.19% for the State with the revised tariff rates coming into effect from April 1.
Goans are bracing for a scorching summer and the hike in power tariff comes as a shocker. It is pertinent to note that an additional streetlight duty of 0.08 per kWh was introduced that added another 1 percent to the electricity bill.
The common man is already reeling under the frequent rise in price of LPG gas and the present hike in the power tariff will only add to the misery.
The state government must encourage domestic rooftop domestic solar plants users to directly apply for the subsidy from the central government.
Tapping solar energy for domestic use could be the only way to tackle the rising power tariff in the long run.
