Conjunctivitis raising its ugly head this season

Conjunctivitis, also known as sore eye, has reportedly raised its ugly head and is believed to be fast spreading in Margao city over the past few days. School students are more prone to the infection which is contagious. It is learnt that a couple of schools in the city have barred entry of students with red and swollen eyes out of fear that they might spread to other students. Some who have contracted the infection have even been sent back home. Several cases have also been reported in schools of Valpoi. Inadequate sanitation and waterlogging during the monsoon can lead to the contamination of water sources. Washing the face with contaminated water can introduce harmful microorganisms into the eyes, leading to infections like conjunctivitis. It causes swelling and redness in the inside of the eyelid and the eye. It can be highly contagious and spreads rapidly in schools and day-care centers. One needs to avoid sharing personal items such as eye drops, towels, bedding, eyewear, etc. Personal hygiene is the key to avoid contracting the infection which is quite prevalent during the rainy season.
