This is with reference to the report, "Mapusa River to be dredged to curb flooding in Guirim - The Goan Everyday July 27, 2023." Dredging of the Mapusa river is perhaps a step in the right direction. It would prevent overflowing of the river to a great extent and as the report says, it would prevent flooding of surrounding areas. In fact, this exercise should be undertaken for all rivers and dams across the country. In Mumbai for instance, the lakes & dams supplying water to the city, are overflowing before the end of the monsoon. But while we are nearing the summer months, we are faced with a water cut. Dredging of the lakes and dams on a regular basis would augment their capacity and the water cut can perhaps be avoided. The authorities need to give it a thought. Also, they need to find other ways of harvesting rain water to cater to the increasing needs of the population.
