The government's proposed electricity tariff hike from 13 to 17 paise per unit for domestic consumers and also for commercial, industrial, etc will be disastrous. In November 2022, NITI Aayog cautioned the Goa Govt over its high power tariff. The government is increasing the power tariff for the third consecutive year, which may be implemented from April 2024. The government proposes tariff hikes and the JERC approves it based on figures provided by the electricity department, which show gaps in revenue to justify the hikes. This burdens the consumers for its failure to control and minimize the power losses and recover huge outstanding dues from defaulters. Various government offices, commercial buildings have pending dues amounting to crores. Electricity department should prioritize improving the power network in Goa. It is completely unfair to burden the common citizens who are struggling to meet their day-to-day needs due to high inflation and unemployment. The government should not play with the sentiments of peoples and for vote banks.
