The Supreme Court's decision to strike down electoral bonds given by various business houses only to one political party, with 90 per cent of the major chunk going to that party and only 10 per cent to other political parties, was a major hassle and injustice to other political parties functioning. This electoral bond system was first started by the late Arun Jaitley, the former minister, to favour his party. It was said that the names of the business houses giving electoral bonds were not disclosed and kept confidential, which was not fair and legal for free and fair elections in the world's largest democracy.
It seemed to be a lethal weapon and a death knell for democracy in our country, appearing to be heading towards dictatorship, as per recent incidents against leaders of opposition parties in ruled states, which appear to be a rape of the democratic fabric of our country. Mostly, the raids by the ED, IT, and CBI were directed towards the opposition, aiming to derail the rise of opposition at the expense of the ruling dispensation, as evidenced by the arrested leaders being from opposition parties only.
Hence, the Supreme Court has taken into account all the illegalities happening and termed these electoral bonds as unconstitutional, which was long overdue. Anyhow, it's better late than never.
