Growing concerns over Goa Police

The reputation, competence and morale of the Goa Police appear to be at a low point. Concerns over corruption, indiscipline and alleged extortion have raised questions about the functioning of the police force. Criminals and gangsters do not appear to fear the Goa Police. The recent shooting in Porvorim is one such example, with the incident taking place in a prominent area of Goa. However, it is also important to acknowledge that the Goa Police appear to be under considerable stress and facing various mental and physical challenges. Police personnel often seem to be deployed for political purposes, the requirements of senior officials and various events. There are also concerns that they may sometimes be under pressure to overlook certain crimes or illegal activities, or to deal harshly with legitimate protests against the BJP-led Goa Government. In conclusion, the Goa Home Ministry, under the current Home Minister, must bear responsibility and be held accountable for the present situation. The police force alone cannot be blamed for the challenges it faces. All of this does not augur well for the welfare and security of people living in Goa.
