In a thrilling encounter at Rosary Church ground, Navelim Sporting Club emerged as the champions of the Bishut Themudo, Jose Santarita Coelho, and Franky Pires Memorial Inter-Village Football Tournament by defeating St Jose de Areal SC 8-7 in a sudden-death shootout on Sunday.
The regular time concluded with both teams deadlocked at 1-1. Avlon Gomes provided an early lead for Areal in the 9th minute, swiftly equalized by Ashnoy Gomes of Navelim SC in the 14th minute.
The shootout saw Navelim SC securing victory with successful shots from Nash Pereira, Ronaldo Pereira, Sadroy Costa, Velington Almeida, Darren Piexoto, Aden Pereira, and Velon Rebello. For Areal SC, Rayman Fernandes, Tyson Carvalho, Stalen Olivieira, Ashnoy Gomes, Draslen Viegas, and Austin Costa found the mark. Navelim SC claimed the winner's purse of Rs 60,000 and the trophy, while Areal SC received Rs 40,000 along with the runner-up trophy.
Former chief minister Luizinho Faleiro graced the occasion as the chief guest and presented the awards. The event was also attended by former MLA Avertano Furtado and Fr Gabriel Coutinho, the Parish Priest of Our Lady of Rosary Church, Navelim.
