Varca Sports Club edged past St Jose de Areal via tiebreaker 4-1 to enter the quarterfinals of the Late Afonso Aguiar Memorial Inter-village football tournament organised by Cuncolim Union at Govt School Playground in Cuncolim.
Varca held the upper hand and enjoyed more ball possession and scoring opportunities. Raymond Fernandes of Sao Jose de Areal shot wide from close range. In the second half, Varca keeper Mohammed Shaikh stood his ground to maintain the clean sheet. At the end of regulation time, both teams failed to score.
In the tiebreaker, Jaylon Cardozo, Salim Sadekar, Constancio Rodrigues, Mohammed Shaikh scored for Varca while only Aryan Carvalho scored for Areal. Mohammed Shaikh of Varca was awarded the Man of the match prize at the hands of Vishal Dessai, Councillor of Cuncolim Municipal Council.
Margarita Boys, JK Caterers reach quarterfinals
Margarita Boys Assolna got the better of Zico Boys Verna 5-3 via the tiebreaker to move into the quarterfinals of the 16th Rebello Pandal football tournament organised by Rebello Pandal at St Rita Church ground, Maina on Wednesday.
Santan netted the first goal of the match with a placement shot for Zico Boys in the 6th minute. In the second half, Margarita Boys scored the leveller through Myson's header in the 67th minute. In the tiebreaker, Margarita Boys Assolna proved to be better shooters. The Man of the match award was presented to Santan of Zico Boys Verna at the hands of Elida Rebello.
Earlier, JK Caterers defeated KFC Cortalim 2-1 to also move into the quarterfinals. Austin put Cortalim into the lead with a 10th-minute strike. JK Caterers netted a goal each through Stanzil and Caji in the 15th and 45th minutes respectively. Stanley of KFC Cortalim received the Man of the match award from Milagris D'Melo.
