With around 48 electric vehicles (EVs) set to be inducted into the public transport system, the Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL) has decided to deploy 10 new electric buses for the upcoming G20 meetings slated to begin on April 17.
These electric mini-buses have been procured under the FAME-II (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles in India) scheme.
Transport Director Rajan Satardekar had expressed the government’s willingness to ensure a smooth flow of movement during the course of the meetings and plans to deploy some buses on the intercity route.
“Deploying the EVs will add value to the prestigious G20 Summit. We are keen to host the delegates gracefully and there is no better way to do that than using EVs instead of small vehicles,” he said.
KTCL Managing Director, Derrick Pereira Neto confirmed that the government has granted KTCL permission to operate the electric mini-buses for the upcoming summit and that after the event ending July, these will be incorporated into the Smart City project.
“The arrival of additional 38 electric buses in June this year will provide citizens with even more efficient and eco-friendly alternative to traditional vehicles,” he further added.
Neto explained that an automatic fare collection system will enable passengers to pay for their tickets electronically through a QR code, without the need for a conductor.
