Shelter Home Street Providence Trust, Goa in collaboration with the Daltonganj Catholic Diocese inaugurated a home for street people and food Bank to end hunger and homelessness in Jharkhand on May 30.
The home and the Food Bank were blessed by Archbishop Felix Toppo and was inaugurated by Bandhu Tirkey, former education minister, in the presence of Goan Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas. MLA Ram Chandra Singh, BDO Vijay Kumar, local panchayat members, priests, nuns and well-wishers were also present on the occasion.
In his address, Bishop Mascarenhas said the Catholic Church dreams that no one should be homeless and should go hungry. He appreciated the support given by everyone to start this project and especially Donald Fernandes, founder of Street Providence NGO who envisaged this project. He thanked the trust for collaborating and also sponsoring another home nursing programme.
Donald Fernandes said his interaction with his migrant inmates had compelled him to start a house in Jharkhand and slowly rehabilitate the migrant in their own culture and later in their respective families.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Singh said this is a project which is one of its kind. The BDO appreciated the unique concept and promised the trust of his support.
Former education minister Bandhu Tirkey publicly recognised the works of Bishop Mascarenhas for the overall development of the diocese and assured his active support in getting the project rolling and also appreciated the home nursing programme.
Archbishop Toppo said this project is an implementation of the mandate given by Christ to serve the poor.
