Two councilors from the ruling panel of the Mapusa Municipal Council, Tushar Tople and Vibha Salgaonkar kicked off ‘Mapusa Market Bachao Andolan' to oppose the construction of a shed in the proposed municipal market renovation plan.
Tople and Salgaonkar started their protest after taking the blessings of Lord Bodgeshwar at Mapusa on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters, Councillor Tople said the iconic ‘Shakuntala' statue in the market will be demolished and the splendor of the Mapusa market will be destroyed with the construction of the shed.
"This market is from the Portuguese era and has been an attraction for the tourists. It is not good to cover the whole market with metal sheets. I will create awareness among the public against the shed in the market," he added.
"I have no problems with the renovation of municipal market, but the shed will create huge problems in case of any emergency. I will ask the traders, youth and citizens to take part in this protest," said Tople.
Councillor Vibha Salgaonkar said there will be increase in encroachments by vendors once the shed is installed.
"MMC should repair the building and provide other basic infrastructure and we do not oppose it," she said.
