33 applications await nod for primary schools

Nearly 33 schools/educational societies have applied to the State Directorate of Education for opening of primary section for the academic year 2016-17.

Of the 33 schools/educational societies, ten have applied for Konkani medium, nine for English medium, eight for Urdu medium and five for Marathi medium. Interestingly, one of the institutions has applied for English/Marathi-medium school.

While most of the schools/educational societies are from North Goa, nearly ten are in South Goa.

Speaking to The Goan, Education Director Gajanan Bhat said, “We have presently received 33 applications/proposals from 33 schools/educational societies from across the State. We have also asked the respective ADEIs for the feasibility reports. The decision of the Department whether to grant permission or not will be conveyed to all these schools/educational societies post April 20.”

Despite nearly 1190 primary schools (government, government aided and government unaided) catering to 95,555 students across the State, there is an increasing demand for opening primary schools.

Speaking about the same, Bhat said, “The State Government has given lot of importance to primary education in regional languages. So, the managements have come forward and decided to start schools in regional languages.”

The statistics released by the Directorate of Education for the year 2016-17, state that there are 1190 primary schools in the State of which 800 are government-run, while 390 others are government-aided and unaided schools.

As regards government primary schools, 725 are Marathi-medium, 22 Konkani-medium, three each in Kannada and Urdu medium and one in Hindi medium. Of the 390 government-aided and unaided, 240 are English-medium, 92 are Marathi medium, 40 Konkani medium, six in Urdu medium, one in Hindi medium and six in English/Marathi medium.
