The newly constructed Ravindra Bhavan Canacona has been named as the Lata Mangeshkar Kalangan.
CANACONA
Stating that various traditional forms of art, music and dance are flourishing in Canacona, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said it was the State government’s obligation to provide a platform to artistes to showcase art and culture in the taluka.
He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating the newly constructed Ravindra Bhavan Canacona, which has been named as the Lata Mangeshkar Kalangan after the legendary singer who hailed from Goa.
He also declared declared the main auditorium would be named as the Late Sanjay Bandekar Auditorium, after the former minister and artist from Canacona, after taking into consideration the demand of Canconcars and as requested by Canacona Municipal Council through their representation.
Earlier in her speech, Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) Chairperson Sara Naik Desai had reminded the dignitaries and audience about CMC’s resolution and wishes of Canacona people to name the cultural Centre in Canacona after late Sanjay Bandekar.
The chief minister, however, announced that the main auditorium would be named after late Sanjay Bandekar and declared that the government had already decided to name the Ravindra Bhavan in Canacona as the Lata Mangeshkar Kalangan.
“After the death of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, who is a Goan by birth, there has not been a single Kalangan in her name. The State government in consultation with Speaker and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar has already taken a decision to name Canacona’s Ravindra Bhavan after Lata Mangeshkar. May Canacona produce many artistes of the likes of Lata Mangeshkar and social workers like Sanjay Bandekar,” Sawant said.
He said a big photo frame of late Bandekar would also be installed in the auditorium to keep his memory alive.
Sawant said though the construction of Ravindra Bhavan was delayed, it is modern and far ahead of other Ravindra Bhavans in the State. He described the complex as one step ahead of Kala Academy in Panaji and Margao’s Ravindra Bhavan, and two steps ahead of Sanquelim’s Ravindra Bhavan.
“This complex should be used not only for drama and Tiatr, but also for career guidance orientation workshops, innovation and startups, research and innovative programmes of students. It should be used for multipurpose use from farmers’ conventions to IT and pharmaceutical seminars,” said Sawant.
Built at a cost of about Rs 60 crore with a seating capacity of 780, the art and culture complex, which had missed a number of deadlines, has been built on an area of 8306 sq. mtrs which consists of main auditorium and all other accessories/facilities required for the auditorium such as green rooms, cafeteria, rehearsal hall.
The complex will have a conference room, art gallery, 4 green rooms, 4 classrooms, Taluka Library with Library Management System and RFID tagging of books, 2 dormitories for visiting artistes, administrative offices and parking bays for 60 four wheelers, 131 two wheelers and 2 trucks.
