As many as seventy gaddas around the Goa Medical College and Hospital could face the axe after a joint inspection by several authorities including the circle inspector of the collectorate office, members of the Santa Cruz and Curca-Bambolim panchayats, officials of the Goa Medical College and police personnel.
The purpose of the inspection, according to those present, was to ascertain the position on the ground before any action can be contemplated against the gaddas nearly all of which are believed to be
illegally operating.
"Most of them are illegal. Some were given permissions under a government scheme but they have since been sublet several times over. Others have permission for a small area but have since expanded and are occupying a much larger area," a source present for the inspection informed.
From a few juice and fruit sellers, the area has now expanded to become a commercial zone with several assorted shops and gaddas mushrooming in the area including hardware shops, clothing gaddas and other shops.
There have been several drives to clear the areas of gaddas with several of them even given space in the underpass that was constructed for the movement of pedestrians. But they have resisted any moves to have them demolished or relocated.
