The supply of beef has run into several issues in the last one year in Goa. The meat traders have now decided to go and meet Minister of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Mauvin Godinho, and seek his help in solving all the issues pertaining to beef supply.
Manna Bepari, president of Qureshi Meat Traders Association of Goa, said, "We are going to meet Godinho and request him to have a joint meeting with him, officials and chairman of Goa Meat Complex and meat traders. We are going to apprise Godinho of our three main concerns."
Bepari continued, "The chilling room at Goa Meat Complex, where an animal is kept after slaughter, needs repair.
"Our first demand will be that the chilling room be repaired as soon as possible. After an animal is slaughtered, it is kept in the chilling room for the day. The next day the meat is transported to shops in the state."
"Then, there are instances of beef getting stolen from Goa Meat Complex. We will urge Godinho to also look into this issue.
"There is another issue that the animals are kept in a very small box for slaughter at Goa Meat Complex. We bring big animals like bull and ox for slaughter, which can't fit in the box," he continued.
Bepari lamented that Goa Meat Complex is still not functional. As of now, meat traders bring already slaughtered and cut animals from Karnataka. But, there have been cases of illegal transportation of beef as well.
For example, recently, police seized 1,300 kgs of beef being illegally transported in Goa.
Bepari said, "All such issues will come to an end when Goa Meat Complex becomes operational. When the meat complex starts functioning, we will be able to bring live animals for slaughter in the state, which will solve a lot of the problems we have been facing."
